The New York Public Library’s iconic Beaux-Arts building on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street is a cultural and architectural treasure. Often referred to as the "main branch," the landmark edifice houses outstanding research collections in the humanities and social sciences, and is renowned for the extraordinary comprehensiveness of its collections as well as its commitment to providing free and equal access to its resources and facilities. Known today as the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, it’s been a defining presence in the city since opening in 1911.
